My review of the 2021 Sony World Photography Awards

2021 Sony World Photography Awards

On 24th of February 2022 I viewed an online exhibition held by Sony for the ‘Sony World Photography Awards. The exhibition had work from some of the world's best amateur, professional, and youth photographers carefully hand selected and combined into one exhibition.

Despite the exhibition being in an online 3d environment which could be seen as quite risky for such a prestigious exhibition, I think it worked surprisingly well. As to be expected the quality of photos selected were very high and once I learnt to navigate the online gallery it was easy to look at each one of them. That’s not to say that there weren’t any technical issues, some of the user interface was very hard to navigate and there were constant frame drops which drastically affected the viewing experience.

Regardless it was an overall positive experience, was very nice to see a wide variety of high-quality digital photography. The exhibition
really opened up my eyes to how valid of a platform the internet is for art, but in saying that it puts into perspective how much art we actually digest online- music, film, tv, fashion and so much more. The internet has been a exceptional platform to share ones art for decades now and it’s positive to see large scale main stream companies such as sony embrace it.
