Manchester five-piece DEAFDEAFDEAF take to the stage with an air of melancholia and cathartic rage.

DEAFDEAFDEAF at Bootleg Social Club, Blackpool

This week, Blackpool’s Bootleg Social Club hosted a wonderful evening of noisy music. As a punkish little venue on the most inconspicuous street imaginable, the crowd were in full force to support the evening’s acts, DEAFDEAFDEAF and Enola Gay.

Hailing from Manchester, DEAFDEAFDEAF showed up with unmistakable vigour. They brought incredible energy to the stage, utilising every inch of space they could, with raucous post-punk instrumentals blending seamlessly with the roaring of angsty vocals.

Opening with single ‘Odes’, the five-piece erupted onstage with an injection of melancholia and introspection. The beat of the drums unforgivingly rattled through the room, travelling up through every pillar and every body, igniting the atmosphere with irrefutable talent. For an independent band, every single member looked entirely in place as they fixed the attention of the crowd, who reciprocated the energy right back with ferocious applause and charged movement.

Carrying the same enthusiasm throughout the set, DEAFDEAFDEAF ploughed through equal parts gloom and catharsis, treating us to several unreleased tracks that show great promise. The band are quickly rising through the ranks, and definitely one to watch out for as they climb their way up the bills of gigs all over the country. There is a certain ambience to their music in a live setting that can only be captured in the essence of simply showing up and opening your heart to sheer cathartic release.

Of course, the group’s music translates to record without interruption, but in a totally different and raw way – the energy simmers to a tangible and more intimate setting, allowing the nuanced and intricate lyrics to take centre stage amongst distorted and spacey guitar riffs. Comparative to the records, the live set exhibits chaos and intensity that has to be experienced firsthand to truly appreciate the immense talents of DEAFDEAFDEAF.

Amidst the exciting disarray of the set, it was a delight to hear that new music is on the way, with the band’s next single teed up for release on 25 March – just ahead of their sold out headline Manchester show at Castle Hotel the following Sunday. Definitely not one to miss out on.
