Poetry Translation Centre internship

The Poetry Translation Centre translates the work of extraordinary poets from Asia, Africa and Latin America and introducing their poems to new audiences in print, in person and online. Their small team of five part-time staff foster long-term relationships with inspirational poets and translators in the UK and abroad. 

This year the internship will be tied to the first-ever international Sarah Maguire Prize for Poetry in Translation, with the intern working closely with all members of the team to deliver a high profile awards ceremony and launch the second prize in 2021.

Job summary

The internship is one day a week and lasts 12 months. In that time, the successful candidate will work across the whole organisation, gaining valuable experience and learning key skills.

Organisational Tasks
● Arts Council Reporting
● Charity Law
● Fundraising from foundations and individual donations
● Preparing Board Papers

Publications
● Tracking book sales
● Preparing Advance Information for PTC publications
● Researching poets and translators
● Preparing publication press releases            

Events
● Running events
● Organising national tours
● Building and maintaining good artist relations
● Events and workshop evaluation

Communications
● Making online content including simple graphics and videos
● Planning social media strategies
● Updating the PTC website
● Building the audience for our Youth Programme

Person specification

This year the PTC is committed to hiring a candidate from a BAME background.

The successful candidate will also have the following:
● An interest in other cultures, especially non-European cultures
● An interest in the Poetry Translation Centre’s work promoting translated poetry
● Experience in using social media platforms
● Familiarity with video editing software and design software
● Great communication skills, both written and verbal
● Flexible and organised
● Resourceful with an ability to use initiative

Important details

● Salary: £10.75 an hour (London Living Wage)
● Hours: 7 hours per week (1 full day)
● Location: The Albany, Douglas Way, Deptford, London SE8 4AG
● Line Manager: Communications Programme Manager
● Contract terms: Twelve-month contract starting in October 2020
● Candidates must have a legal right to work in the UK.
