Billie Eilish set to headline Glastonbury 2022

The musician will become the youngest ever headliner of the festival, at just 20 years old.

Billie Eilish set to headline Glastonbury 2022

Pop phenomenon Billie Eilish has recently unveiled that she will be headlining Glastonbury Festival 2022 on her Instagram page. This was then confirmed by Glastonbury Festival’s Emily Eavis who stated earlier today that Eilish will headline the Friday night of the event. Eavis wrote on Twitter: “We couldn’t be happier to announce that the wondrous @billieeilish is headlining the Pyramid on the Friday at next year’s Glastonbury Festival, becoming the youngest solo headliner in our history. This feels like the perfect way for us to return and I cannot wait!”

On Sunday, Eilish posted an image to her Instagram story, wearing a hooded jumper that was bearing the words ‘Glastonbury Festival, Worthy Farm’. It was captioned with “2022”, which led many to believe that the post was confirmation of the widespread rumours that she was to headline next year.

Fans had already found that there was a gap coinciding with the Friday of Glastonbury in the Europe 2022 tour schedule for her newest album, Happier Than Ever. The pop star is likely to be joined by iconic rock band Aerosmith, who were previously confirmed for 2020; they also have similarly convenient rescheduled tour dates. Elton John is yet another rumoured headliner, with his Farewell to Yellow Brick Road tour seeing another coincidental gap in it’s tour schedule.

Queens Of the Stone Age have also been heavily rumoured to play the festival, headlining the Other Stage on Friday. eFestivals, a forum that focuses on festival rumours and news, said that these rumours are founded thanks to “strong info from a top source, also with backing from a second source”. Crowded House have also confirmed their attendance, whilst it is rumoured that Diana Ross will fill the ‘legends slot’ on Sunday, after being previously scheduled for 2020.

Both festivals in 2020 and 2021 were cancelled due to the Covid 19 pandemic, and 2022 will hopefully see the return of the famous festival. In August, Michael Eavis said that “big names” set to play the cancelled festival in 2020 would be returning for next year.

Eilish recently performed at Austin City Limits festival in Texas, where she condemned the new anti-abortion laws put in place, stating: “When they made that s**t a law, I almost didn’t want to do the show because I wanted to punish this f*****g place for allowing that to happen here. But then I remembered that it’s you guys that are the f*****g victims, and you deserve everything in the world,” she continued. “And we need to tell them to shut the f**k up.”
