Coventry City of Culture 2021 events begin

Launching Coventry’s year as the UK City of Culture, the film ‘TIMELESS WORDS MADE NEW’ sees the words of novelist George Eliot set against a musical drill backdrop produced by rap artist Coolie.

Quotes from Eliot, who lived in Coventry in the 19th century, are projected onto local buildings as Coolie “breathes new life” into the Victorian author’s words and leads viewers on a personal tour around the city.

Of his involvement with the film, Coolie says "Being born and raised in Coventry and a proud Coventrian, it felt amazing just to be able to be a part of something that puts our city on the map”. Other contributors to the film include Pauline Black of The Selecter, author Lee Childs, film director Debbie Isitt and Ann Lucas, the lord mayor of Coventry.

Creative director Chenine Bhathena said “We had 55,000 people tuning in and we've had messages of support from all over the nation.”

Ms Bhathena went on to say that combining Coolie's work with the words of George Eliot made the launch "very fresh and contemporary, but it has a real poignancy and resonance".

Quotes from Eliot’s work such as “It is a narrow mind which cannot look at a subject from various points of view” were chosen for their relevance after a year where people and communities had been challenged and young people were "particularly hard hit", the Coventry City of Culture Trust said.

Coventry City of Culture 2021 will be a year-long celebration of music, dance, theatre, art and culture.
