Golden Globe nominations 2018

A number of surprises and snubs

Golden Globe nominations 2018

The Golden Globe nominations have been released and there were a number of surprises.

First, not a single woman was nominated for best director, ignoring Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), Dee Rees (Mudbound) and Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird).

In fact, women seem to have been snubbed quite a lot with the nominations. “Beauty and the Beast,” the most successful movie of 2017, didn’t get nominated in the musical/comedy category, and “Wonder Woman” hasn’t been nominated for anything.

The Shape of Water is leading, with seven nominations, while “The Post” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” running up with six.

Ansel Elgort got a surprise nomination for “Baby Driver”, pushing out the more expected Adam Sandler or Numail Nanjiani. This is his first Golden Globe nomination too!

The allegations against Kevin Spacey don’t appear to have hampered Ridley Scott’s drama “All the Money in the World”. Spacey was cut from the project and Christopher Plummer was brought in at the last minute to do reshoots. Despite this, the film is up for three nominations: best supporting actor, best across and best director.

Personally, I’m disappointed to see there wasn’t a single nomination for Logan, and exceptionally surprised to see Wonder Woman snubbed so thoroughly. Given the complex relationship, it was amusing to see Christian Slater get a nomination in Mr Robot but not  Rami Malek.

Below is the full list of nominations.

Also annoying that The Post gets nominated because the Globes get advanced screenings - it hasn't even been released anywhere.
