Venues Day 2016 announce associate partners

Grassroots music venues around the UK are invited to a one-day networking event run by the Music Venue Trust (MVT).

Venues Day 2016 is being held at Roundhouse, London, on 18th October, and will focus around two key themes: Localism and community, and The Music Industry.

First run in December 2014, Venues Day serves to raise awareness of the difficult position small independent venues across the country have found themselves facing in recent years.

MVT has raised sponsorship money for the event, which enables representatives of the music venues to attend for free. Pre-booking is currently available for members of the Music Venues Alliance (MVA) and TAMVA (Trade Association of the Music Venues Alliance). MVT announced this week that in the 4 days that pre-booking has been open that over 80 venues have confirmed attendance.

Help Musicians UK, White Light and Jack Daniels were also announced as associate partners for Venues Day 2016, joining Ticketweb and UK Music to help support the largest gathering of grassroot music venues.

Last year's sold out Venues Day was held at the Ministry of Sound, where 400 delegates had the opportunity to network with leading cultural organisations and music industry businesses on issues of finance, insurance, licensing and legal issues. The event also played host to a chaired debate between Ed Vaizey MP, Michael Dugher MP, Jo Dipple, Joyce Wilson from Arts Council England, and BBC 6 Music DJ Steve Lamacq.

In a previous interview we conducted with Mark Davyd, the Founder and CEO of Music Venue Trust, he spoke about the issues that were being faced by independent venues.

Using the example of The Fleece in Bristol, he highlighted how legislation meant that the properly developers are currently under no legal obligation to soundproof their buildings, so it fell to The Fleece to fund £700,000 of sound insulation or risk getting a noise complaint, and subsequently closed.

Speaking to Voice, the Head of Music at the Roundhouse Trust, Jane Beese said:

"We are delighted to be hosting this year's Music Venues Trust Day on 18 October – the work of the trust is very close to our hearts and ethos. Supporting community venues and arts spaces is one of the most important items on the agenda for the music business today. These grassroots regional venues are the breeding grounds for the next generation of artists and the lifeblood our business. Keeping them alive is essential. We're hoping that our Roundhouse resident artists will benefit from meeting these regional promoters and similarly the venues will be inspired by our business model here at the Roundhouse."

General passes for the public will be on sale from 22nd August.
