Where Are They Now? with Jonathan Tebble

What are you up to in your creative work at the moment?

I have just published my first book about my transition; you can read the interview I did for Arts Award Voice here! Other than that, I write in my spare time: I do text-based roleplay on networking sites which helps me build my creative writing and thinking skills and I write short (and longer) stories. I find reacting and interacting with other people to a plotline is a great way to start and continue regular creative writing.

What are the highlights of your arts career to date?

Probably my book getting published, which I've always wanted to do! I also took part in NaNo in 2012, which is where you write 50,000 words of a novel in a month- and I completed it!

What do you hope to be doing in five years time?

I'd like to continue writing- perhaps work for a music magazine, and I'd like to definitely continue with my novel writing- I have four more to go in the series I started in November!

Which levels of Arts Award did you do, and how did you use it to develop your creativity or skills?

I'm currently doing my Gold. I hope to link my words with screen printing artwork, which I think will help me think about how words and scenes work as screen printed pieces. I'm looking forward to it; it's going to be a very interesting exercise.

What advice would you give to young people doing Arts Award who want to follow in your footsteps?

Write as much as you can and develop a style you feel comfortable with. Think about how you can make your writing interesting and readable; for me, that's the key. When I write collaboratively with someone, I like them to be able to understand the flow of my writing, and this also helps in 'every day' writing as well as personal creative writing.
