Interview with Boris

Boris the Puppet takes some time to talk to Voice about the show, inspirations, and to give advice to young people.

Interview with Boris

Hello! Could you first introduce yourself to the reader?

Hello. My name is Boris. Of 'Boris & Sergey' fame.

How would you describe your show?

If you can imagine the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan, the middle scenes of Goodfellas, and the last scene of Escape from Alcatraz: it is nothing like any of those.

Why do you want to perform at Edinburgh Festival Fringe?

I don't, Sergey makes me.

What differentiates it from other festivals?

More Scottish people.

What's changed at EdFringe in recent years? Are these changes positive or negative?

There's lots more puppets than there used to be. So now me and Sergey have lots of friends to orgy and take intoxicants with. Whether you find that positive or negative is up to you.

What first motivated you to enter the industry? Who were your inspirations?

I think what first drew me and Sergey to the industry was the huge amount of wealth to be made on the Fringe circuit. However it turns out this wasn't wealth in a literal sense, it was in fact a wealth of something called 'experience'. Which we could add to our 'CV'.

In terms of our inspirations I would say our crippling debts and our angry loan shark.

If you didn't have your current job, what would you probably be doing?

I'd probably while away my time robbing vicars.

If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?

Vicar Robber.

What is your earliest childhood art memory?

Finger painting in blood, there was so very much blood back then.

Do you ever feel any pressure to be a social commentator, or constantly update material to respond to events?

*Boris stops listening halfway through the question and asks to go to the toilet. He doesn't come back for forty five minutes and is surprised that the interviewer is still there when he returns.*

Equally, do you think there has been a shift in public sentiment that has affected your work?

*Boris asks to go to the toilet and doesn't come back this time.*

Describe the last year in 5 words or less.

It. Was. All. My. Fault.

If you could work with anybody, from any point in history, who would you pick and why?

Sergey told me to say him... but as a side project I'm working on a time-machine made entirely out of clocks and PVA glue, so hopefully before the next Fringe I will have travelled through time and will be able to answer that question for you.

Boris and Sergey's One Man Extravaganza is performing at Assembly George Square Theatre at 21:25 until the 27th August. For tickets and more information visit the Ed Fringe website.
