Interview with Ali Muzaffar, Summer Showcase participant

We speak to 22-year-old Ali Muzaffar about their entry to the Voice Summer Showcase.

Interview with Ali Muzaffar, Summer Showcase participant

For their submission to the 2021 Voice Summer Showcase, Ali submitted a video of himself playing the keyboard.

We invited Jack Solloway, Marketing Executive at Bloomsbury Digital Resources and former Assistant Editor to Voice, to join current Assistant Editor Saskia Calliste to view the submission and provide feedback to the artist.

Jack said: "I was incredibly charmed by this, Ali. Learning an instrument is incredibly difficult to do, and I love the vulnerability of your videoing yourself during the learning process. Twinkle Twinkle is a classic and a strong opener – a beginner’s favourite but he nails it. The basics are important, and his Pachelbel’s Canon is nearly there. A great effort from Ali with burgeoning musicality, and I hope he sticks at it."

Saskia said: "It’s not easy recording yourself doing something you aren’t 100% confident in, but it’s great to see an entry like this reminding us all that creativity is a journey. Both pieces were played fairly well, and they were recognisable to anyone familiar with those pieces of music. It will be great to see what Ali does next as he shows some great promise."

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I'm currently a Kickstart Journalist with Voice Magazine and I'm from England!

Give us a brief description of your submission?

My submission is myself playing music. I created it using a keyboard I received for my 21st birthday last year.

How long have you been practicing your artform?

Technically it's been a little over a year since I started practicing with my keyboard, although there has been a long lull in between for me as well! I started learning how to play a little bit over the several lockdowns in 2020 but ended up stopping midway through the year.

What is some advice you wish you'd had before you started your artform?

Definitely invest in a dedicated keyboard stand and seat – it would make playing so much more comfortable since it puts a little less strain on your wrists!
