Interview with Great British Mysteries

Could you first introduce yourself to the reader?

Oh, hello reader. We are Rose Robinson and Will Close, aka character comedy duo Great British Mysteries

Tell us about your show?

Great British Mysteries: 1599? is the follow-up to our sold-out debut show from 2017. But set 400 years earlier. Confused? You will be. In this edition, mystery-hunters Olive and Teddy become embroiled with witches, haunted houses, and the scent of Cardinal Wolsey's conscience. It's like The Woman in Black meets Keystage Two Tudor history. Expect multi-roling, homemade sound effects and more gags than Henry VIII had wives. Seven?

Why do you want to perform at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and is it different from other festivals?

The Edinburgh Fringe is THE place for comedy. We have very soft spots in our hearts for festivals like Adelaide Fringe (few things beat a post-show beer in a tropical tiki bar) and Leicester Comedy Festival (home to hands down the greatest curry house in the Northern hemisphere), but Edinburgh pips the others to the post. The camaraderie, the drizzle, the Jacket Potato shop. It’s unbeatable.

What first motivated you to enter the industry? Who were your inspirations?

Blackadder and Fawlty Towers were big ones; seeing people like Rowan Atkinson and Miranda Richardson playing heightened characters, doing silly voices and clearly having an absolute blast was really inspiring.

Do you ever feel any pressure to be a social commentator, or constantly update material to respond to events?

Our material is mostly centered around Tudor puns and invisible greyhounds…

Equally, do you feel there has been a shift in public sentiment that has affected your work?

With the world going completely bananas, we think the public needs Olive and Teddy’s joyful irreverence more than ever!

Describe the last year in 5 words or less?

Merry larking about in ruffs.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to take a show up to the fringe?

Take a show that you absolutely love performing in. It’s a long old month, but if you’re doing something that really floats your boat, there’s no better way to spend your August.

And what advice do you wish youd been given when entering the industry?

Under NO circumstances should you inhale a massive cheeseburger and chips 5 minutes before performing.

When and where can people see your show?

4:45pm at Pleasance Below
