Interview with Wrenne

Musician and performer Wrenne talks to Voice about her debut Edinburgh Festival Fringe show!

Interview with Wrenne

Could you first introduce yourself to the reader?

Hello! My name is Wrenne. I sing. I write. I jump. I run. I mother. I love. I want to know all about you. I bet we have loads in common.

Tell us about your show?

There’s light, film, movement, costume, songs and surprises all trying to tell a story about all - or at least a lot - of us. Do you feel alien, too?

Why do you want to perform at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and is it different from other festivals?

Edinburgh Festival is THE BEST. Everyone has told me, truth is I’ve actually never been to the Fringe, but I KNOW THIS from people I trust: it’s the best place on the planet to premiere this kind of show.

What first motivated you to enter the industry? Who were your inspirations?

I grew up the baby sister in a big musical family who all inspired and influenced me deeper that anyone “out there” in the world. Family Jam sessions galore, yo, and hymns (yup, those Mormons like a hymn) and folk songs everywhere. And JT. And Joni. Andandand…

I didn’t know what the industry was and that you had to enter it until someone said they could “help me get places”. It was fun trying that out too, I’ve been to some cool places... Right now, my Wrenne partner, Hugo Vereker, and I are working outside of the conventional music ‘industry’ with story, stage and moving images. And we hope and feel it will get us to many more interesting places.

Do you ever feel any pressure to be a social commentator, or constantly update material to respond to events?

O man, I do feel pressure... to be the most best mother to my daughter. Of course, she doesn’t pressure me, I put that on myself! But for what you said, never say never, but I hope not. I am an emotional being and my music, words and shows reflect that, they’re not political, and I’d rather keep it that way. Being a spokesperson or commentator is not my goal, but if I touch or move someone or challenge or inform them with a piece of work, then job done.

Equally, do you feel there has been a shift in public sentiment that has affected your work?

Most of my work is affected by shifts in personal sentiment. I’m’ not sure if that’s a good or bad thing… but it’s the truth.

Describe the last year in 5 words or less?

She’s 8. Music. Trampolines. Parkour.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to take a show up to the fringe?

Make sure you have enough money. And a shedload of good people around you. You might need a towbar. Don’t be scared.

And what advice do you wish you’d been given when entering the industry?

Always be authentic, and never fail. Actually, that’s my advice to anyone getting into music...this attitude has saved me from all my potentially very bad experiences, which have been plenty, like for everyone. When you’re busy being authentic, the feeling of success really does come with the journey. And I generally do say ‘Yes’ to everything... except when it feels like danger for myself or someone else.

When and where can people see your show?
