Circus performer Spenser Inwood from A Good Catch talks about the show, how she got into circus, and offers advice to young people

Interview with Spenser Inwood

Could you first introduce yourself to the reader?

Hi my name is Spenser Inwood, I’m a circus performer and maker, sister, homeowner, smiling is my natural mood, knitter, and feminist.

Tell us about your show?

Devising without a leader, hand knitting costumes and honouring the life events that get in the way of work, Casting Off is circus that highlights the complexity of being a woman and the democratic process of devising. The accumulation of moments: flipping, climbing and flying while divulging and dissecting the many texts that embody each day.

Why do you want to perform at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and is it different from other festivals?

We are all super excited to be performing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. This festival is the launching pad for so many companies to start working in the UK and Europe. A Good Catch is a new company and this is our first full length work. Edinburgh Fringe is different from other festivals because of its enormity, in terms of how many shows that are on but also if you do well at the fringe the prestige that comes with it.

What first motivated you to enter the industry? Who were your inspirations?

I have been performing and training since I was 8 with an Australian children’s circus called the Flying Fruit Fly Circus. I fell in love with the art form. The physicality and the mental application of circus is what hooked me. To be able to share stories and stretch people’s imaginations of what is possible. Some of my inspirations are Acrobat (Australia), as they always surprise me. I never know what to expect going into there shows. When I was younger I remember seeing Circus Oz for the first time and thinking “Wow I really can do this as a career” and I never looked back from then.

Do you ever feel any pressure to be a social commentator, or constantly update material to respond to events?

I feel the pressure but I also feel like actually we just need to keep telling stories that don’t get much air time. We didn’t make the show with any pressure for there to be a specific message but we made a show and we are three women and we tell our stories and the stories of other women. This show isn’t just for women. But you will be hearing their stories.

Equally, do you feel there has been a shift in public sentiment that has affected your work?

Yes, I think there are more people that are actively seeking out different kinds of work. Work that is made, performed and crated by a diverse range of people in our society, I know I do.

Describe the last year in 5 words or less?

Letting my heart lead.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to take a show up to the fringe?

Know what there is to lose. Make sure you are going to the fringe for reasons other than to make money. If you have never been then why not.

And what advice do you wish you’d been given when entering the industry?

Let your self be silly. Finding your silly person will let you make better work.

When and where can people see your show?

We are on at 5:15pm from the 2nd-26th (not 13th or 20th) August at the Assembly George Square Gardens - Spiegeltent Palais Du Variete

And where can people find, follow and like you online?
