Interview with Steen Raskopoulos

Could you first introduce yourself to the reader?

Hello reader. I'm Steen Raskopoulos. You probably read that, as Steve or Steven and you are incorrect. Don't worry; I've had that all my life.

How would you describe your show?

A character based Solo sketch/improv show with audience participation.

Why do you want to perform at Edinburgh Festival Fringe?

It's gone pretty well the past two times and John Kearns owes me some money.

What differentiates it from other festivals?

Everything is a venue. I caught a taxi home in 2014 and it turned out to be a one-man show.

What first motivated you to enter the industry? Who were your inspirations?

All dem bebes. Craig 'The Bones' Jones and Charlie 'no last name'.

If you didn't have your current job, what would you probably be doing?

Being a crime fighting billionaire.

If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?

Being a crime fighting billionaire.

What is your earliest childhood art memory?

I brought home a finger painting I'd done at pre-school. My dad said 'what is this shit?' My mum said 'Steen painted it'. My dad replied, 'this is great' and hung it on the fridge.

Do you ever feel any pressure to be a social commentator, or constantly update material to respond to events?

Nope.

Equally, do you think there has been a shift in public sentiment that has affected your work?

A doctor once wrote me a long email about my character Timmy and how it had affected her psyche and asked me not to perform that character again as she treated patients who were neglected as children. But, I'm a 6'4 white male pretending to be an eight-year-old kid… who was neglected by the father… played by myself. #fightclub

Describe the last year in 5 words or less?

2016, shit time for celebrities.

If you could work with anybody, from any point in history, who would you pick and why?

Anon. Written some of the best shit I've ever read.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to take a show up to the fringe?

As long as you don't have an unusual Danish/Greek name and do solo sketch/improv comedy go for it.

When and where can people see your show?

8pm – Underbelly Cowgate and (The Bear Pack) 10.40pm Underbelly Cowgate

And where can people find, follow and like you online?

@steenrasko – instagram and twitter.

Steen Raskopoulos – The Coolest Kid in Competitive Chess is performing at Underbelly, Cowgate at 20:00 on 3rd - 27th (not 14th). For tickets and more information visit the Ed Fringe website.
