Interview with Martin Urbano, who is NOT a paedophile

Could you first introduce yourself to the reader.

I'm Martin Urbano, and I am NOT a paedophile.

How would you describe your show?

The show is kind of about me being a paedophile, but it's basically taking a satirical look at comedians that complain about 'cancel culture'. And it's funny!

What is your favourite part of your show?

I love when I sit on the stool. I also have some audience interaction bits that are a lot of fun to perform.

If your show had a theme song, what would it be and why?

Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly. Because it's a good song!

What is one thing you hope audiences will take away from your show?

A piece of the venue for their memories. I would also like my show to be a conversation starter for couples on a first date.

If you could add a surprise celebrity cameo to your show, who would it be and why?

R. Kelly. Because he's a great musician!

Why do you want to perform at Edinburgh Festival Fringe?

I heard that if you have a successful run at Edinburgh, you will finally be happy. Not sure how much truth there is to that, but I am DESPERATE!

What differentiates it from other festivals?

Some other festivals have paid me to perform there, but I thought about changing things up and putting all the money upfront myself. I'm also excited to run my hour every night for a whole month, because it sounds fun and healthy!

What is one thing you would change about the Edinburgh Festival Fringe?

Probably the location. Move it to New York!

How has your background, upbringing and education had an impact on your artistic career?

I was born in a small border town at the bottom-most tip of Texas. My goal is to become successful and famous, and then return to my town as a hero bearing gifts and riches. This is what gives me my drive.

What is your favourite thing about performing for a live audience?

The immediate validation of laughter from live human beings.

What is the strangest thing that has ever happened to you while performing?

One time, I bombed!

What's the most challenging or unconventional venue you've ever performed in, and how did it impact the overall experience?

One time I performed at a comedy club called the Improv in Houston, TX, and in the middle of my set, someone came on the god mic and told me to leave the stage. And so I did. Quite a challenge! I would love to perform there again someday.

Is there a piece of feedback you've received from an audience member or critic after a performance that’s stuck with you?

A tweet from someone regarding my paedophile jokes: "It wasn't the jokes themselves, it was the sheer AMOUNT of them."

What is your favourite thing to do in Edinburgh when you're not performing? How do you relax and look after your mental health?

I've never been, but I also don't believe in mental health.

Is there a show you’re excited to see when you’re up there?

Stamptown produced shows ONLY.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone thinking about taking a show up to Edinburgh? If you’ve never been before, what would you say has been (potentially) the most useful?

My friend Maeve Higgins told me to drink lots of water. I probably won't, because I'm rebellious.
