Interview with comedian Yuriko Kotani

Could you first introduce yourself to the reader?

Hello! My name is Yuriko Kotani and I’m a UK-based Japanese stand-up comedian.

How would you describe your show?

It’s a one hour with full of surprises (I hope).

Why do you want to perform at Edinburgh Festival Fringe?

Because it’s an incredible opportunity where I can get to perform my own show I’ve created almost everyday for a month.

What differentiates it from other festivals?

It’s one of the biggest art festivals in the whole world and there are so many comedy shows there. It was my first time to see the festival like that in my life.

What first motivated you to enter the industry? Who were your inspirations?

I fell in love with British comedy especially the dark humour when I came to the UK.

How has your background, upbringing and education had an impact on your artistic career?

I am who I am now because of my life experiences. So what I’m creating is likely that affected by it. And I’m looking forward to seeing how it will grow and evolve in the future.

What is your earliest childhood art memory?

I loved drawing. And also I loved making people laugh.

If you didnt have your current job, what would you probably be doing?

Probably I’d still be writing comedy by myself and keep thinking how I can put them out and make people laugh.

Did Covid-19 change the way you create work? Do you approach shows with a different mentality now?

Definitely. I’m so grateful and really appreciate that we can get to do live shows with audiences.

Describe the last year in 5 words or less?

Meeting face-to-face? Or zoom?”

If you could work with anybody, from any point in history, who would you pick and why?

I don’t know if I’m answering this question right but if I can meet anyone at any point in history, I’d like to join the creator team that made great films or TV shows in the past. I want to join, see and learn how they created such masterpiece that made so people enjoy and connect.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to take a show up to the fringe?

Just go up and have a look around, watch shows and enjoy it. It’s a massive festival so you will discover so many new things that you’ve never seen and learn!

When and where can people see your show?

My show is called Yuriko Kotani: Kaiju About” and it’s at 7:10pm from 3rd to 29th August (not 15th) at Pleasance 10Dome. Please come and say hello!

And where can people find, follow and like you online?
