Can you tell us a little about the project that you entered to this competition?
Our film was the result of a school project for our Design class. Our assignment was to design an animation that communicates the consequences of the growth of palm oil to a target audience of children. We could choose our own age group and we chose the younger children of primary school.
This assignment was related to the Masarang Foundation, that we learned about in school.
Was the idea of 'changing the world' something you had considered before the competition?
We weren't really thinking about changing the world, but by collecting information before we started, we realised how important the message of Masarang was. Moreover one of us has lived in Malaysia for a couple of years and visited an orangutan center. Also she experienced the smog that covered parts of Malaysia and other countries, due to the burning of the jungle to make room for palm oil plantations.
Why do you think it's important that art attempts to bring about change?
People like to look at art. It is entertaining and can catch people's attention. So it can help to communicate important issues.
When did you start making art?
We have art and design lessons in school. In our school art and design are considered to be very important subjects. It does trigger us to make films or other projects in our own time as well.
What else are you up to right now?
We are working towards the end of the school year and are busy making the props for the End of Year School Production.
Throughout the school year, we have been working with our class on a humungous pyramid, made of thousands of individual small pyramids. it is really fun and we've worked on it during our lunch and snack breaks and some even during their holidays. It must be finished at the end of June.
What would be your ideal project to work on?
A project that we can do with many people. Maybe even from around the world. So it should be a digital creation that can be joined by many others.
What can we expect from you in the next year or so? Do you have any plans for new projects?
We don't have any concrete new plans yet. But we are sure that after our summer holiday we will start new projects together. We really like to create things, especially things with a purpose.
