Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith, John Lee Hooker - what do all these fantastic artists have in common (besides being great)? They’ve all inspired the latest work from Rachael Sage - a separate spoken word and avant garde jazz project which goes by Poetica. Their latest single, ‘Passenger’, is a sensual exploration of sound and space featuring a plethora of brilliant musicians.
Sage speaks, “‘Passenger’ was one of the most fun tracks to produce on Poetica... The featured harmonica player is the effortlessly soulful UK-based Will Wilde; Dave Eggar adds his signature cello flourishes, and the incredible guitarists Gerry Leonard (David Bowie) and Jack Petruzelli (Patti Smith) added an ambiance that helps underscore the sensuality of the poem.”
The instrumentation is sparse and measured, allowing the words of frontwoman Rachael Sage space to breathe. The track is restrained, to great rather than detrimental effect, and showcases the beauty in simplicity which was hinted at during Sage’s alt-folk career; here it is centre stage.
‘Passenger’ is available everywhere now, and the full-length album POETICA is out on the 22nd October 2021.
