Crocheting a beanie

Hi, for my Silver Arts Award I chose to learn how to crochet. After learning some basic crochet stitches I decided to make a hat. I would appreciate any comments reviewing it.

I followed a simple tutorial on YouTube and spent around 6 hours crocheting this hat. It would have taken less time however I lost a few stitches without realising and therefore had to go back a couple of rows. I also found that sometimes when the hook warmed up, it created quite a bit of friction with the yarn and made it difficult to draw up loops.

I chose bonus chunky yarn in the shade cinder which I think gives the hat a nice texture. If I were to make it again, I would probably start counting the stitches in order to keep track and maybe I would add a faux fluff ball at the top.

To make this hat, I used half-double stitch (and back half-double stitch) as well as single stitch (and back single stitch). From not knowing how to crochet to making a hat, I believed I have accomplished my goal of learning a new, practical skill - crocheting.

Any comments would be highly appreciated!

Well done Gemma! I see from the posted date that I'm late in the day to comment but from a fellow hand crafter (I did knitting for my Silver Arts Award) I think you've done a really good job! Nice choice of yarn and stitch. Your reflections are definitely spot on! Good luck with your future projects.
