Reveiw of `Beyond the Brotherhood- The Pre-Raphaelites Legacy`

Review of Southampton City Art Gallery's` current exhibition on the Pre-Raphaelites.

I would be grateful of any feedback or comments reviewing my reveiw. Thank you.

What was the title of the exhibition/show?

Beyond the Brotherhood- The Pre-Raphaelites legacy

Why did you choose to attend this exhibition/show?

Firstly I love the artists, their movement and their art, they are inspiring. The exhibition was also local.

Who were the artists and what do they create?

The artists were a group called the Pre-Raphaelites which consisted of many many artists but started in 1848 by a small group of British painters- Dante Rosseti, Milias and Holman Hunt. They rebelled against Royal Academy`s unimaginative ways and created a movement of artists who believed in ‘going to nature’ for inspiration and created paintings based on religion then later literature and poetry about love and death. Telling stories with morals through their artwork.

What did you see?

Beautiful layout of framed paintings each with a different story to tell. They were presented in a few big rooms that were all joined. So there was a lot of space for onlookers to wonder. There were also benches in a few rooms kindly placed in the middle so you could sit, rest and marvel at the incredible art work. Amazing.

What were your first impressions

Unbelievable and incredible are the two words i`d use to describe my first impression.

Did you find anything particularly interesting to you personally?

I loved that in some paintings if you look really close you could see the paint strokes of the brush that were sometimes messy or seemed so until you took a step back and it all came together to create fabric, or a face etc…

Also those paint strokes were once created by an artist years ago and their artwork is still being displayed. All the paintings were older than me, older than my dad.

What did you learn which will help you to achieve your challenge?

That within paintings you can create a story that have a meaning and morals.

And you can create shapes using the characters in your painting for example the triangular composition. That smuges of paint up close can be a masterpiece when looked at from afar.

Did you enjoy the experience overall? Why?

Yes, I really enjoyed the experience overall because the artists were inspiring and passionate.

I hoped this helped
