Bronze Arts Award – Life of Pi review
What did you experience as an audience member?
I found it amazing to be part of the audience, as the performers used puppetry to represent the animals on the ship, and it felt like the animals were there. The actors were very good too, so good it made me feel as though it was actually happening – especially in the sad scenes.
What did you like best and why?
I liked watching the two people who were talking to Pi work out who the animals represented when he told them the true story, because everything that has happened starts to click into place in your brain, and it is really fun to watch that happen on stage as well.
What art forms were involved?
-Drama
-Design
-Lighting
-Music
-Puppetry
What do you think could have been done better?
I think that they could have added a bit more emotion to Pi’s performance, as sometimes the actors didn’t really show us how Pi was feeling. Overall, though, there is nothing else I would want to change about it, as it was absolutely brilliant.
Would you recommend it to others? Explain why.
I would definitely recommend it, as it is a truly emotional story about a young boy who loses his family when the boat they are on sinks, and turns the sad, depressing tale of what actually happened into an exciting story for the man from the government, who needs to know what actually happened, and the woman from the Canadian Embassy (as the ship was headed to Canada) who just wants to make sure that Pi is OK.
The scenes involving all three of them (the man, the woman, and pi) are hilarious, as Pi and the woman, in a way, team up against the man, leaving him in the wrong a lot of the time.
Overall, it is a truly amazing, moving, emotional performance that you need to see.
Life of Pi made me want to read/watch more things like it, leading me to discover a wider range of material, some of which will most certainly influence future routines/show pieces.
This is a fab review, Isobel. :) Is there anything that surprised you about this show?
