Witch Hunt, a ‘one woman show with a twist’, began like something from a pantomime as a hooded figure emerged onto the stage closely followed by a second before, I believe, accidentally spitting the false witch teeth onto the floor. This was followed by a farcical sequence of the two attempting to retrieve the teeth from the floor, despite the fact that they both had either abnormally sized fake hands stuck on.
Witch Hunt was surreal throughout. Made up of an array of ludicrous skits that put a risqué spin on well known tales, both women play a variety of outrageous characters. I left the auditorium feeling like I’d just woken up from a very bizarre dream. Whilst the two had undeniably great interactions with each other, I found it hard to relate to the dark and crude humour that intensified as the show went on.
There were a few great lines that had terrific impact as they spoke of feminism and current affairs in a satirical and eccentric way. Not only did they provide a comedic political commentary, but they had the audience giggling with the suggestive interactions throughout. A particular stand out moment which contributes to the ‘bizarre dream’ feeling I mentioned, was when one of the actors danced on stage dressed half as a squirrel, half in a tuxedo, throwing around cheesy pick up lines and practically lap dancing on one of the audience members.
Though much of the audience found the performance hilarious, I struggled to relate to the dark humour and felt slightly uncomfortable in parts. Whilst I totally agree with the issues they were raising and believe that female empowerment is so important, particularly in today’s society, the way they went about it just didn’t quite click with me.
That being said, Witch Hunt is a huge hit with some, so give it a watch yourself and form your own opinions.
