Great Expectations (Cambridge Arts Theatre)

On Thursday 14th June 2018, I went to see Cambridge Arts Theatre's stage adaptation on Charles Dicken's classic novel: Great Expectations.

Great Expectations (Cambridge Arts Theatre)

I liked how a simple change in clothes or an added accessory changed the character's personality or changed who the character was. I also liked the way the actor who played Pip (the main character) used a higher pitched voice at the start of the play to show he was a boy to a deeper voice at the end to imply that he had grown into a man. Finally, I liked how Cambridge Arts Theatre had added an extra, raised, piece of staging to the centre of the stage because it gave the people on it more power/presence where they could stand over the people on the side or in front of them, making it look like they were in charge.

However, I disliked how there were so few actors. I know I said how I liked how a change in clothes changed the character, but as there were so many characters it got confusing on which character the different clothes represented. I also didn't like that adults played children at the beginning, because I think if children played the children, there would have been a more childish vibe at the start instead of thinking that the characters were already mature, because throughout the play they are meant to get older and we're meant to feel, as an audience, like we are part of their journey of growing up.

I would recommend Great Expectations to others, because it was really interesting how they used the whole stage in different ways to represent different places and I think that you have to see it to know what I mean. It was also interesting and different because there were people dotted around the stage playing instruments live for us where we could see them, which added to the atmosphere and made it more dramatic.

From this experience, I learnt different ways on how to show your characters, for example, you could do different voices, wear different clothes and stand on a raised or lowed piece of staging to show your social status compared to others.
