Wizard of Oz Review - Silver arts award

On Wednesday 3rd January 2018, I went to the Trinity Theatre in Tunbridge Wells to watch the Wizard of Oz, a musical by the youth theatre company comprised of budding local actors and actresses. This play included several art forms: drama, music and dance. This was the first time I had seen a play version of the Wizard of Oz, having previously seen it as a film, but I have seen other musicals similar to this by the youth company in the same theatre which were very good.

Overall, I really enjoyed watching this performance. The set was very well done and helped to bring the whole scene to life, transporting you back to Kansas in the 1930s and the Land of Oz. The costumes were also very good and suited the characters perfectly. I thought the costumes of the scarecrow and tin man were especially good as the scarecrow looked like a proper scarecrow and the tin man seemed to be made of kitchen items. I thought the introduction of puppets and visual effects into it added interest and difference and the visual effects made the whole scene seem more life-like. The choreography and singing were brilliant and very polished and sharp.

On the other hand, although the play was brilliant, there were a couple of things which I thought could have done with changing or a little improvement. I didn't really like how the characters often left the stage and came down into the audience. The Trinity is a relatively small theatre so they felt too close. The only other thing I would change would have been to make the voice of the projected wizard even louder and deeper to make it more menacing. I think the voice sounded too like it was a jokey-one, rather than a serious and threatening wizard.

Overall, I would definitely recommend seeing this play or another at the Trinity theatre because the singing, dancing, acting and visual effects all contributed to pulling off a brilliant show that the audience will remember.

Although my art form is not either of these that featured in the play, I learnt a lot about other art forms which I think helped with my understanding.
