The Lion King

My review of the play of The Lion King, which I went to go and see being performed in London in June 2017. This play included several art forms; drama, music and art. This was the first time which I had been to see this play, but I had already been to see Matilda and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory as plays, which had similar ideas to the Lion King.

The Lion King

I really enjoyed watching this performance as I especially liked the costumes and puppets that were made for the show. They made the whole atmosphere of the performance incredible and, along with the acting, made the show amazing overall. These costumes were bright and colourful which fitted with the setting of the play and drew the audience into the play before the acting even began. The puppets also helped to do this, and they also gave the individual characters their personalities. Another feature of the show that made it enjoyable was the singing and dancing which cleverly fitted into the show. This helped to keep the audience entertained throughout the entire show. It also made the performance more memorable than it would have otherwise been.

On the other hand, if you were wanting to watch a play that stayed true to the original film, the script didn’t quite do that. However, I think that the differences between the film and play were quite small and didn’t particularly affect the overall show. There were no major changes in the plot line or the characters or songs that made the original film the way it is today. For this reason, I wouldn’t change my view on the performance as a whole, just because of this. I would also still highly recommend this performance to others as I still found it thoroughly enjoyable.

From watching the play of the Lion King, I learnt just how effective turning a film into a play can be and how successful they can turn out to be.

My experience of The Lion King play was supported by workshops that I was involved in before and after the play. We had professional dancers, actors and musicians come into our school to share some of there skills with us, all of which had a Lion King theme. These workshops taught me how to fit different rhythms together in music, do different styles of dance which I hadn’t attempted before and work with others to create a performance using a script. As well as doing these workshops, after we had watched the play we went backstage to speak to one of the actors who was involved in it. This was really inspiring, and it made me feel more involved with the play.
