Arts review- Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

On the 27th November, I travelled to London to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in the Palace Theatre.

Even from the start of the play where the stage burst into action with inspiring music, dancers waving cloaks and suitcases moving over the set, I was enchanted. The set was magical, with a turntable floor in the centre of all the action and columns on either side of the stage which were pulled about and moved to create different scenes, for example a school hall, a church and the forbidden forest.

The technical aspects of the play were captivating. Lights on the end of the wands gave the performance a fascinating touch, and sparks flying during battles made the piece more tense and engaging. However, by far my favourite technique was during the time travel scenes. The lights were enhanced and dimmed, and projections moved around objects to give the impression that they were being warped. Sound effects also boomed and whooshed to totally capture and throw you into the moment. It was spectacular.

The costumes also didn't fail to enthral me. Especially that of the centaur, using hooves and the back of a horse costume, the actor was made to look realistic. From the clopping of his hooves to the style of his acting, I was totally convinced that he was a real centaur- which is very difficult- so I found this amazing.

The acting also was enjoyable. It was in a naturalistic style, which happens to be my favourite, although the humour and animation of the actors stopped the play from being boring- which was a surprise as it was in 2 parts, each 2 hours and 40 minutes.

On the whole, I thoroughly enjoyed the play and recommend it to anyone who is thinking of going- however get tickets soon as its fully booked until 2018!
