Jack the Ripper London Walking Tour Review

Within a group of other tourists and true-crime enthusiasts, you will walk the streets of East London and view the sights of where the serial killer's victims took their last breaths.

For only £15 per person, you will be transported through time to the streets of Victorian London in the year 1888 for two hours. You will walk through Whitechapel, Brick Lane, and Shoreditch, a centre for industrialisation, poverty, and criminal activity. To navigate you through these grim settings will be a guide, an expert in Victorian London and the infamous murderer himself. Along the journey, your guide will paint a vivid and gruesome picture of the horrors that befell that time, better known as the Autumn of Terror, using maps and photos to illustrate what London looked like 137 years ago.

The tour creates a balanced atmosphere of historical facts and storytelling, making the experience both educational and exhilarating. By walking down old, narrow alleyways and unchanged pubs, you’ll uncover the lives of the five women Jack the Ripper brutally murdered. Although the murders occurred weeks and days apart, what ties these women together is a shared struggle with alcoholism and poverty, as well as their navigation of an unjust world for single women.

While the tour is primarily about the murderer Jack the Ripper, as it progresses, you will uncover that the tour is ultimately about the stories of these unfortunate women and the lives he stole from them.

A major highlight is the stop on Dorset Street, which had a horrific reputation as one of the most unlawful places in all of London. It also happens to be the location of Jack the Ripper's last (recorded) victim, Mary Kelly. What is notable about this stop is that you’ll be shown an actual photo from the crime scene, showcasing how her body was found mutilated and butchered beyond recognition. While, of course, the photo is extremely disturbing, it also shows a peek into the early stages of forensic science and the twisted psyche of the serial killer.

The tour is truly fascinating. However, the chaotic and busy streets of London can sometimes make it difficult to hear your guide. It's essential to try to block out the external sounds of traffic and pedestrians and listen carefully to the story being shared. It is highly recommended to start your tour at night to fully immerse yourself in the eerie, dark corners of London.

If you’re a history buff or simply enjoy the sinister remnants of Victorian London, this tour is a must while you are visiting the capital. While the experience is not for the faint of heart, it offers a chance to explore East London and learn through the senses about the notorious Jack the Ripper case.
