Book Review: Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros

In the third instalment of the Empyrean series, Violet Sorrengail is no longer a student simply trying to survive – she’s a warrior fighting for the future of her world. With the protective wards of Aretia faltering and threats closing in from every direction, Violet must travel beyond the known territories to seek alliances and uncover truths that could shift the balance of power. In a world built on secrets, Violet learns that survival isn’t just about strength – it’s about who you trust, and what you’re willing to risk.

Yarros expertly deepens her worldbuilding in Onyx Storm, expanding beyond Basgiath into new territories filled with political tension, magical intrigue, and dangerous alliances. The pacing is tight, maintaining the series' trademark blend of explosive action and character-driven storytelling. The evolution of Violet’s character is one of the book’s greatest strengths. She’s grown more confident and capable, but still layered with vulnerability and doubt.

Moreover, relationships remain central to the story, particularly the emotional complexities between Violet and Xaden. Their dynamic is full of tension, trust issues, and moments of tenderness that add real depth to the narrative. Yarros doesn't shy away from hard choices or emotional stakes, and the book is all the better for it. Supporting characters are also given room to grow, while the mystery at the heart of the plot keeps the reader questioning until the very end.

With its gripping twists and explosive revelations, Onyx Storm leaves you desperate for the next chapter.
