Review: BBC's The Apprentice, Episode 4

Fiery, fun to watch, but definitely not frugal...potatoes vs tomatoes, which team came out on top on Thursday evening? And was it a deserved victory?

Review: BBC's The Apprentice, Episode 4

Episode Four of BBC's The Apprentice was aired on Thursday evening, and it certainly brought its talking points.

Firstly, let's just commend Mia's team for creating a product that only cost them 88p to produce, that is literally incredible, especially considering how good the pizzas looked! Profit margins were high, so I was surprised they didn't win by even more than the final result.

I thought that Mia was a brilliant Project Manager, who utilised her team well, and kept the positivity going even when it seemed to be a useless case.

The subteam bargaining to sell their clients 150 kg of chopped tomatoes was absolutely ridiculous, but I can't fault them too much because I would also not have a clue how much that would equate to in filled boxes, and the effort put in in the kitchen to actually meet the required specifications they'd agreed was extremely impressive, and not something you see often, as evidenced by Nadia's team.

Jordan had me laughing out loud in front of the TV with his comments about Mia trying to remain positive being 'ridiculous'...if he'd been working with Nadia, he might have been slightly more grateful for the high morale of his PM. In fact, Jordan has been handing us great moments every week, with his one-liners and facial expressions, and I sincerely hope we get to experience it for many weeks to come.

I thought that Keir did a brilliant job as subteam leader for team potatoes (or parallel, whichever you prefer) – despite Nadia's criticisms, still coming out of the deal with their clients getting only one pound less than they originally agreed, was a miracle...that's how you negotiate properly in business. Of course, if Carlo was still around he'd have wanted Keir to build more rapport with the clients, but I genuinely don't see how you can fault him at all for his contributions this task, and I do think that he will make it to the interview stage, as he's got a very good mix of not pushing himself to the front, but also still stepping up and offering valuable contributions when needed.

Anisa going for Project Manager a third time was the most predictable thing to ever happen in Apprentice history, but we love to see it! The team would have done a lot better if they'd just backed her again, but I'm glad they didn't because I needed screen time of Nadia as project manager in my life.

Ultimately, bangers and mash was a horrible decision because who is actually going to want to eat that at a market!? I was surprised they sold as many as they did! The second you hear that you're working with potatoes to create food for the general public in an outdoor space, surely your mind instantly goes to chips or crisps?

So then of course, we come to the question of the firing – I don't see how a single person can genuinely think that Nadia should not have been fired on this task. It was an absolute trainwreck, and while it made for wonderful viewing for spectators, definitely not a good show of leadership, or business skills in general. Personally I would have fired Jana at the same time because I felt robbed by how simple the boardroom was – 'easiest boardroom ever', but the final decision was clearly the right one because it would have just wasted everyone's time to beat around the bush. I am surprised that nothing was brought up in the final boardroom about Chisola completely miscalculating the sausages though, so she'd better hope that nobody remembers that in a future task.

I actually think that Thursday's episode might have been my favourite so far this series, but I can't wait to find out what this week brings us!

The Apprentice Episode 5 is being aired on Thursday 27th February at 9pm on BBC1.

Worst performance ever as a project manager, I think. A complete disaster.
