My Review On Girls That Geek

This is my review on a super fun event that I attended.

We started the day by driving to the event, when we got there, we went in and walked to the cinema...

First a lady started talking about her projects such as: coconut fabric, bio plastics and a top with galvanic skin response (GSR) sensor, which maps an emotional response.

The coconut fabric was especially interesting as it was made out of the hairy bit on the outside of the coconut which when made into fabric it conducts electricity, and because it can do that, she made a top with it that as I said has a GSR sensor, which is then used to do CGI in movies. She also talked about using plants to dye fabric, which I found quite interesting. Some of the plants she talked about were woad and indigo, the indigo she said, is used to dye jeans but is often added in with chemicals which are not good for your body and can cause diseases.

I really liked this part. Although there was a bit too much talking, I would definitely listen again.

Waste age exhibition

Next, we went to the exhibition where I saw wooden clothing, customised sweats and furry seats made from agave leaves. I love the furry seat because it's such a good way to help the environment by reducing plastic in faux fur that most people make nowadays.

I watched a few videos in the exhibition, then went to look at some of the ways to recycle. After I left the exhibition, I went down a corridor towards a sticker board where there was a wall with options that said ways to help reduce waste and help the environment. I placed mine on takeaways and single use plastics because I thought those things were things that I could cut down on.

Then I went to the second part of the exhibition where I saw more ways that people aren't reducing waste, such as : Kettles, companies nowadays make kettles that aren’t made to last, and it’s the same with lots of different things, like : Fast fashion, electronics and toys, there's probably so much more too.

I loved this part of the event because it showed how day to day items affect the environment and it’s important to help look after it by cutting down on single use plastics & items that are just going to end up in landfill.

Show and tell

After I looked around the exhibition, I carried on walking to the next room. When I got there, I saw lots of people at tables with their work and projects on them. I went over to one of the tables and saw a DJ turntable, so I went over and asked the lady at the table if I could have a go, she said yes and showed me how to use it. After I learned I was free to make music! Me and my mum had a go and we both wore headphones to listen, I browsed through the music and picked one I liked and then played It, it sounded so good (but a bit too loud) I kept changing the music to hear what it sounded like, I played with the settings to make it louder or quieter, and then when I had enough I took my headphones off and walked to the next table. We approached another lady who had made earbuds, she made them in lots of different skin colours. She also does bio - design and digital neurotherapy which is a treatment that helps people improve their brain function through technology.

After, I went to the final station which was an on-screen avatar that reacts to your movement. Me and my mum had a go, I did a little dance, and she did a karate kick! I really liked the outfit on the avatar, which consisted of a little pink top with green accents and lots of little cool buttons and electronic features.

This was by far my favourite part of the event as it was interactive, and I could speak to some of the creators.

Careers panel

After all that fun in the show and tell room, I went on back to the cinema. I got seated and waited for the speech to start. First a lady called Pamela started talking about her job which was an author, but not just any kind of author an author that makes books come to life! She said she has a son with autism, and he is mute which means he can’t tell people what he wants and needs. So, she invented books, books that when a phone is pointed at them the pictures appear on your screen 3D! The graphics looked really cool in full colour and they almost looked like they were popping out at you. She said that they helped her son, and he uses the pictures to tell her what he needs.

Next, the lady that made the earbuds started talking about her life and what inspired her to start her healing business and how she made her earbuds. I thought the earbuds where a really good idea for people that have trouble relaxing. Then finally a lady called Allie talked about how she uses nature to inspire her art.

Final show

After the talk we were all silenced as the end show was about to start. The show started and lots of bright colour appeared on the walls, almost like a kaleidoscope. Eventually a lady started walking down the stairs, she was dressed in sequins and a bright blue jumpsuit with lots of little bits of glitter on it. She put some music on and started walking around spreading rose petals on the floor, there was a picture on the screen, and she was using objects to represent it. After a while, she started playing an instrument which made funny alien sounds.

This was a fun event, and I would attend again.
