Wicked (2024) Movie Review

There's a prequel to a beloved Hollywood version of a fairy tale that's good! Wicked tells us the story of how Elphaba, how she was discriminated, became friends with Glinda but after meeting the Wizard of Oz, their lives will take different paths.

Wicked (2024) Movie Review

First, I’ve got to say is that this film looks incredible, from set design, the CGI animals and flying sequences and costumes, it all looks like an evolution of what the original Wizard of Oz would have looked like to audiences back in 1939. This film’s message fitted with the plot of the film, with the whole subplot involving the animals being forced to stay silent mirroring the discrimination against Elphaba for most of her life for being green, which is a clever way of using metaphors to teach kids about the history of racism and slavery without undermining the story.

The main cast were better than I expected, Cynthia Erivo did a really good job as Alphaba, especially since I had never heard of her before this film but I really feel that she perfectly conveyed  all guilt, trauma and anger that the character would due to her skin colour, what happened to her sister and how people treated her due to her green skin, however she is a character with her own wants, relationships and desires, like hatred then friendship with Glinda, her passion for animals to be treated as equals. Want to meet the Wizard so she could have everything she ever wanted and her relationship with her father and sister. Erivo is also a fantastic singer, and her greatest moment was, defying gravity because the song left the rest of the people , I was sitting with amazement at how incredible a singer she is. The rest of cast were great as well, with Ariana Grande making her return back into acting as the self-obsessed but kind Glinda who was definitely the comically stand-out of the film, with dim-wittedness and odd quirks however her relationship with Alphaba felt natural since Glinda did something kind for Alphaba’s sister, so that brought them slowly over the course of the film closer together which felt much more believable than if they liked each other after only one scene establishing their hatred for each other at first, plus of course she was absolutely phenomenal with her singing since she is a professional pop singer . Michielle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum were great as Madame Morrible and The Wizard of Oz, who were interested in Alphaba’s powers and perfectly portrayed the kind and eccentric mentors for Alphaba but they are complicit with the animal silencing, with The Wizard being the one to issue the order.

In conclusion, I can certainly recommend Wicked to anybody, even if you like me aren’t huge fans of musicals, you’ll be thoroughly surprised by how much you will enjoy yourself with this film. This definitely makes me intrigued enough to see the next film which is always the sign that a film is good. 8/10
