A spectacular play!

A Christmas Carol – Radio Play Live on Stage, Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury

I went to Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury on the 20th November with my mum to watch ‘A Christmas Carol’, a live radio play on stage, which was amazing!

Everyone knows the story of ‘A Christmas Carol’, which is 180 years old, and this version did not disappoint.

It was a delight to witness this show using radio podcast props for sound effects including Marley’s arrival, metal chains clanging on a table, ringing of the bell by hand down the microphone, to when Scrooge meets the three ghosts of Christmas and using coconuts shells to portray horses dashing through the London streets on Christmas Eve.

When I closed my eyes for a few moments, it was like I was listening to the play on a radio.  Very cleverly produced and all the actors were fantastic.

Colin Baker gave a brilliant performance as Ebenezer Scrooge, Peter Purves delighted everyone as Charles Dickens (the Narrator) and Tom Baker, via video screen, played Jacob Marley wonderfully.  The other actors who were involved delivered different accents, helped with radio props and they all brought the story book to life.

My favorite part was where Scrooge met the ghost of Christmas Present, who was also showing Scrooge why he should change his ways.  When they visited Bob Cratchit’s house with his family around him, including the adorable Tiny Tim who embodies the opposite characteristics of Scrooge, this part of the book was portrayed beautifully by the actors and it is the true meaning of Christmas for me; being surrounded by your loved ones.

A terrific play which I thoroughly enjoyed plus meeting Colin Baker afterwards in the foyer was a real bonus; he is a true gent.  I definitely recommend as it certainly gets you into the festive spirit!
