“Fun for all the Family!” A review of the 2024 Hereford Pantomime at the Courtyard.

Sleeping Beauty 2024 Hereford Pantomime

When the new Princess is born a curse is held that she will prick her finger on a spindle and die on her 21st birthday. As her birthday quickly approaches, what will happen to the Princess? And will anyone be able to break the curse?

“Sleeping Beauty”, presented by Courtyard Productions, written by Lindsay Maples and directed by Estelle van Warmelo is a production based on the original and classic fairytale. Hereford’s panto is full of excitement, laughter, and sparkle. With a cast of 6 main leads and 4 ensemble/dancers, it is a fantastic night out for people of all ages!

On 6th December, I had the pleasure of watching the 7 o’clock performance of Sleeping Beauty. The stage and auditorium was a feast of glitter and fairy lights which acted as a link between audience and cast. I felt entranced by the transformation and was eager for the show to begin. The incredible set, provided by Glitter Pantomimes, was outstanding throughout the whole performance. The use of levels, texture and colour helped the audience easily follow along with the characters on their multiple journeys to save the princess.

The Ensemble members created a vital backdrop to the main action, singing and and dancing through an array of roles and supporting the main cast members superbly. The live musicians were a great asset to the show and the clever adaptation of popular songs were a highlight for me which had the audience singing along. Who could resist Dion Davies as Madge Ickle, the pantomime dame, performing his flamboyant version of Shania Twain’s “Man I Feel Like a Woman.” His character set the younger audience members giggling from the very beginning whilst his use of modern innuendos and one liners had the adult audience roaring along too.

Another stand out performance for me was Geraint Rhys Edwards who played the role of Prince Dudley. His voice was truly exceptional and his characterisation was brilliant. My favourite part of the show by far had to be the unique rendition of the “Twelve Days of Christmas" which was so hilarious.

For many, a trip to the pantomime with family and friends heralds the start of the festive season. So why not choose Sleeping Beauty at the Courtyard to fill you with Christmas cheer, it won’t disappoint.
