A DC film with lost potential, Blue Beetle film review

A DC film with lost potential, Blue Beetle film review

A film from Director Angel Manuel Soto with lost potential. This film follows Jaime (Xolo Maridueña) as in his attempts to get a job from Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezie), he finds himself becoming the symbiotic host of a powerful and ancient, alien relic. This film has an intriguing storyline and good cast but looses you throughout the film due to the pace and writing.

Personally, as I have said I see a lot of potential in the film, as the general idea is fantastic, and it had an actor I love in, Harvey Guillén’s, despite his role not having much screen time, I appreciated the time he was on screen. The idea of the film was a great concept, but how it was written and brought to screen felt like a desperate attempt from DC to be more like Marvel Studios. There were some moments where it was so obvious by the humour, music, or action, that they had tried and failed.

Spoilers beyond this point

I have not read the comics so forgive me if this is the way fans feel it should be, but the events towards the end, when Victoria Kord (Susan) has taken Jaime from his family, causing his family to be the ones to save him, felt like a poor choice. I understand the want to show the power of family, and possibly to be for representation, but it felt like weak writing. I am all for strong families, but when it is a superhero story with one main hero, it did not feel right, and the sequences building up to them saving him started to lose me and the company I had when watching it.

Despite my criticism, I had no problem with the acting at all, I loved the character of Rudy (George Lopez), but I do not think the scripting of the story allowed the actors to perform to the best of their abilities.

In summary, it is a film that I think could have been a hit given a few changes, but with it being a flop at the box office, shows where they went wrong. I am not sure weather or not there will be another film due to the flop, but the ending implied it, so I hope they surprise us if there is ever a ‘Blue Beetle 2’.
