Are you interested in stories of rich cultures? Are you interested in the environment and its responses to human intervention? If so, the Winter exhibition at London's Saatchi gallery is an opportunity you won't want to miss! One ticket will grant you access to three of the Winter exhibitions!
Anastasia Samoylova’s exhibition Adaptation invites viewers to take a thorough look at the everyday and observe how the environment responds to human intervention. A stand-out photo decpited a blue armchair partially submerged under water. The pastel hue of both the armchair and a building reflected in the water lures viewers closer. Depending on your view depends on whether the environment or humanity is encroaching on the other. At first glance, I felt unsettled by the environment’s ability to submerge our comfort items. On second glance, humanity felt like a hindrance to the water.
As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic is a collection of photographs featuring African Diasporic culture. I was immediately moved by the curation of photography in this exhibition; the intimate beauty of everyday Black life is an ideal that isn’t often in the media. As the exhibition pointed out, images of the Black body resting or relaxing are rarely seen in public. Each image felt like a stance of dignity and power with many of the subjects making direct eye contact with the camera, as though they could see the viewer and were proud to be seen.
Aneesa Dawoojee’s exhibition March of the Hummingbirds explores the deep links between the West Indies and the UK. I was touched by the representations of ‘non-typical’ Indian women holding traditional West-Indian objects and domestic items. It felt like a union between their past and present selves, and the union of the West Indies and UK cultures. I found myself reflecting on this crossover of cultures, and how it was the small objects that drew their own personal reflection.
