Review: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Christopher Wheeldon’s take on the classic novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll returns to the Royal Ballet & Opera House once again and it did not disappoint!

Review: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

I was fortunate enough to view a live screening of this production at Ludlow Assembly Rooms on the 15th October 2024 and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was an explosion of colour and music and illusions which I’ve personally never experienced before. The performance is spilt into 3 acts and lasts approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes including 2 intervals and there are snacks and drinks available to purchase.

I went into the Ludlow Assembly Rooms with no idea of what to expect and feel I must admit that I was slightly unsure at first due to it being a screening. However, I had absolutely nothing to worry about! The whole show was great and there was a really good atmosphere within the building as well. Everyone appeared to be enjoying the show and there was a lot of laughter from the audience. The show followed the novel by Lewis Carroll rather than the Disney movie so I do feel this is something people should be potentially aware of before they go as there are some pretty big differences between to the two, but don't let this put you off. It is a brilliant take on the novel, and it was executed perfectly.

One moment from the show that particularly stood out to me was in Act 1 when Alice is trying to fit through the little door, but she just grows bigger and bigger. The way they went about this was so fun and original! Another key moment that stood out to me was at the beginning of Act 3 when the Queen of Hearts has her moment. It was absolutely hilarious! Everyone in the room seemed to find it very amusing and it definitely stuck with me. The costumes were also amazing, I loved the way the Queen of Hearts dress opened! I also really liked the White Rabbits costume and the pink glasses that we then saw at the end just made it even better. The story was fun, the costumes were fun, and the dancing was absolutely beautiful!

I would highly recommend going to see this screening and I also look forward to seeing what else the Royal Ballet & Opera House has to offer. The whole evening was lovely, and I hope this convinces anyone whose been considering it to make that jump into the rabbit hole.
