100% MY TYPE ON PAPER REVIEW- EDINBURGH FRINGE- 12/08/2024

Sammy and Clyde are on their first date. They are both nervous (easy to tell from the bad jokes and awkward silences), neither of them have been particularly lucky with their past relationships, they think that all that is left out there is people who just want a fling, no commitment, nothing real. It all starts just like any other first date, EXTREMELY awkward.

This was the perfect way to start the show. Within the first 5 minutes, the audience was captured and laughing at every joke. This can be put down to the fact that when writing the show, Annesley based a lot of her inspiration from her own dating experience, therefore making it so relatable for the young adult based audience.

Through the first part of the show, I thought I was just watching a couple of people relive their first date over and over again, but when Hogan jumped out from the audience as The Producer, the story became apparent.

Taking inspiration from Love Island, the story continues in the format of a TV show. Clyde was seen to be really selfish while Sammy was seen to be super materialistic, going on and on about her lipstick, when really, they were both just normal, and wanting to be loved. Constantly being watched over and being told what to what to say, do and even feel is hard enough but when you are being purposely exhausted to heighten the drama, it’s even worse.

The actors captured this amazingly. Watching Sammy, Clyde and even The Producer break down are tensions rose was heartbreaking. The way that Sammy’s confidence was seen to completely shatter to the point of hating herself as she was losing her grasp of reality and Clyde was changing from the man that he was at the start to being angry and short tempered. They were all desperate and being pushed to their breaking point and that was felt within the audience. When all seemed lost, the cast cleverly has a change of costume which highlighted to the audience how materialistic and fake ‘reality’ TV is.

Through the use of audience interaction, a bit of silliness and joking around as well as addressing real problems, this show covered everything and was successful in reminding the audience that what you see on TV is far from the truth, really, behind the screen there are some vulnerable people just trying to make a living for themselves.

100% MY TYPE ON PAPER is definitely a must see show if you find yourself at the Edinburgh Fringe this year.
