DONUTS by Extended Play

Intoxicating contemporary dance brilliantly presented by three young dancers.

DONUTS by Extended Play

This is a playful show which features dancers who genuinely seemed so relaxed and comfortable on stage that we might as well have been watching them through a window to their own lounge at home.

With a set comprising a single sofa, on a scorching day in a tent based venue, you are nonetheless transported by the warmth of their presentation and friendship radiating from the stage. Perhaps this was helped by the ‘classic’ comedy TV lines playing as you entered and waited for the show to start – lines that you’ll be very familiar with if you watched that sort of TV through the 90’s and 00’s.

This is a production perfect for any family wanting to explore contemporary dance as an art form, but afraid to commit to a full length show that'd you have to travel miles to see. This story of friendship, communicated through dance and skilful performance, will uplift anyone feeling a bit down.

Not only were the characterisations (including facial expression and urgency of movement) spot on, the shapes the dancers form on stage was like precision engineering if it flowed down a winding river.

This inventive piece was excellently choreographed, with minimal but effective lighting, and complemented by the music used throughout. The timing of the dancers with the music was incredibly to the beat; with times where the performers are literally racing around the stage ‘playing’ in dance form, and after a few minutes they still end their dance phrase at the exact moment the music stops. How they combine their joyful expressions with such technical skill is something worth seeing if you’re aspiring to be a dancer.

Head to see DONUTS for a heartwarming time and see how dance should be done!
