Review: Future Jazz

A firm Fringe favourite; Future Jazz has made a triumphant return.

Review: Future Jazz

A warmly lit Spiegeltent welcomed the hotly anticipated return of Future Jazz, a devilish collaboration between jazz aficionados Ebi Soda and local legends Beyond The Blue. A motley crowd of jazz-types and blues-lovers filled the tent without cause for concern, an atmosphere akin to a Parisian jazz cafe, just with a little more canvas and a few less escargots.

Coastal collective Beyond The Blue have an Afro-Latin influence with an affinity for melodic improvisation and complex structures. As a seven piece alternative jazz ensemble, their sound crosses genres and pushes boundaries whilst retaining their roots in the UK jazz scene. To the crowd’s delight, they shared their new dub “Cats On a Hot Tin Roof”, showcasing an impressive depth of instrumentation and deft ability to experiment.

Described as “staunch anti-traditionalists”, Ebi Soda’s sound is as eccentric as it is refined, with a history of delivering tracks to the highest standard and with enviable ease. Hailing from our very own Brighton shores, the quintet has a sonic identity in constant ebb and flow, moving with the tide of new wave jazz. Charactised by distinctive drum breaks and sprawling soundscapes, Ebi Soda’s discography spans eras whilst remaining uniquely contemporary.

Once again, the Fringe has created a space for audience and artist to come together and celebrate jazz in its entirety, exploring the breadth of contemporary music and the impact it has on the city by the sea. Here’s to many more.
