Young Volunteer Opportunity at The William Morris Society

We are recruiting for a brand-new Young Volunteer Project at the William Morris Society! We need your imagination and ideas to help us to explore issues around climate change and the environment to inspire the local community.

Young Volunteer Opportunity at The William Morris Society

Are you 16-24 and living or studying in London?

Do you have an interest in art, design and issues around climate change and the environment?

The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham has declared a climate emergency and aims to reduce carbon emissions in the borough to net zero by 2030. William Morris was a socialist campaigner and designer who lived in Hammersmith and today the William Morris Society is based at his former home overlooking the Thames. We think William Morris would have been a campaigner for sustainable living, as he was an environmental visionary in his time. His novel News from Nowhere imagines a utopian future and his wallpaper and textile designs drew upon nature to provide people with a deeper connection to the natural world. This project will give you the opportunity to imagine what Hammersmith & Fulham could look like in the future and how we can get there.

We will meet one evening a week, for 7 weeks, via zoom (potentially in person at the end of the project) to explore climate change and William Morris as an environmentalist, and you will have the opportunity to take part in artist-led workshops with practising artists who explore sustainability in their work. At the end of the project, we will be using everything we have learnt to produce our own art works to encourage residents of the local area to live more sustainably. We will then stage an exhibition of these works at the William Morris Society.

What will you gain from the project?

  • The opportunity to work with a charity and heritage organisation
  • To provide a voice for young people in the local area
  • The opportunity to work alongside like-minded peers and make new friends
  • The chance to have your artwork displayed in a Museum
  • To develop skills for your CV in communication, teamwork and leadership
  • To take part in fun creative activities

To apply you must be:

  • Aged 16-24
  • Living or studying in London (preferably the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham or a neighbouring borough)
  • Available for meetings via Zoom 5pm-6.15pm on the following Thursdays: 20, 27 May and 3, 10, 17, and 24 June and 1 July 2021 (potentially in person for the last meetings)

How to apply: please email our Learning and Outreach Officer, Tabitha Gibbs at [email protected] with your CV and a short paragraph introduction about yourself and why you are interested in the project.

Application deadline: 5pm, Friday 7 May 2021
