One of Sky Arts’ biggest shows Landscape Artist of the Year is returning for summer 2021. Heats will be held across the UK in beautiful locations for artists to paint in a timeframe of four hours. These works will then be judged and one artist will be selected from each heat, before the remaining artists face off to win a £10,000 commission for a major British institution and £500 worth of art materials from Cass Art.
If you are a regular watcher of Sky Arts then you will recognise the judges from Landscape Artist’s sister show Portrait Artist of the Year. Tai-Shan Schierenberg is an award-winning painter whose commissioned portrait work has included everyone from Sir Stephen Hawking to Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. Kate Bryan is an art historian, curator and arts broadcaster and is the Head of Collections at Soho House. Completing the judging trio is Kathleen Soriano who writes, broadcasts and curates all things art. It is their expert judging that decides the artistic fate of all the competitors.
Hester Berry, a previous entrant, stated that “Taking part in the competition has really raised my profile. I've made many sales and been offered teaching jobs and commissions as a result. For those thinking about applying this year, I’d say submit a piece you're really happy with that best reflects your practice and something you can readily talk about.”
