Award-nominated dance magazine dance art journal announces an open call for writers to take part in its Guest Writers programme which will run every Thursday from February 2023 – April 2023. This 8-week programme is designed to provide emerging writers aged 18-30 with the opportunities to develop their writing skills and gain experience in arts journalism.
Through a series of 8 workshops with leading industry journalists and dance practitioners, participants will learn about different approaches to writing about art, focusing mainly on the field of dance. Participants will expand their definition of the reviewer or the art critic and delve into different ways of textually capturing movement. Who are dance art journal?
Established in 2019, the award-nominated dance art journal has garnered a reputation for platforming work of underrepresented dance artists. As well as writing about the work of 50 dance makers each year, dance art journal has worked on commissioned projects for Sadler’s Wells, Siobhan Davies Studios, Dance City and 2Faced Dance Company. Last year, dance art journal was selected to be part of Roundhouse’s Accelerator Programme, a programme which helps the development of emerging creative businesses.
What is the programme and what will it involve?
The Guest Writers is a writers development programme that believes in the radical potential of creatively uplifting and upskilling each other.
Through a series of 8 workshops with writers and dance practitioners we are going to learn about different approaches to writing about art, focusing mainly on the field of dance. We will expand our definition of the reviewer or the art critic and delve into more poetic ways of textually capturing movement.
The programme culminates in a paid writing commission of £100 for each participant.
Who is it for?
The programme welcomes anyone based in the UK who has an interest in writing about art and live performance. Previous experience in dance reviewing is not necessary but a creative curiosity and interest in pursuing that is essential.
We are especially interested to hear from people who are under-represented in the field and we welcome applications from those who identify as marginalised. The programme aims to diversify the sector, with 50% of our spots reserved for people outside of London and another 50% for applicants from the Global Majority.
Where is it taking place?
The majority of workshops will take place every Thursday evening on Zoom with two of them happening in person at Siobhan Davies Studios in London. An additional in-person event will take place in June at The Roundhouse as a way of celebrating the end of the course and connecting with other writers and dance artists. Travel expenses will be reimbursed for all participants whether you live in or outside of London. We cannot reimburse flights.
Selection panel
Applications will be read by the Guest Writers selection panel. The panel comprises angel dust (producer at DAJ and project lead), Katie Hagan (founder of DAJ), Francesca Matthys (writer at DAJ), Oluwaseun Olayiwola (choreographer and poet) and Stuart Waters.
dance art journal’s Guest Writers programme is supported by Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grants.
