Trafalgar Square hosts National Gallery artworks outdoors

Copies of paintings including Botticelli's ‘Venus and Mars’ and Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ are part of an open-air art exhibition in Trafalgar Square.

Trafalgar Square hosts National Gallery artworks outdoors

The reproductions outside the National Gallery, which are the same size as the originals inside, will be on display from 10 August to 2 September 2021.

Works by Gainsborough, Bermejo, Titian and Bronzino are also on display. Visitors can learn more about the stories behind the famous paintings by scanning QR codes.

As well as viewing the exhibition, members of the public are able to use one of the 30 easels set up in the square to create their own masterpiece. There are also artist-led sessions available to attend, and you can find the programme for these here

The installation in Trafalgar Square is part of Westminster Council's Inside Out Festival – a celebration of art and culture that aims to encourage visitors back into London's West End.

It has been included in Art of London's "augmented reality" art trail, which begins just outside the National Gallery before weaving through London's West End. This free event showcases paintings from London’s leading institutions through an accessible augmented reality app (available on iOS and Android). Scanning the stickers at each stop will grant access to audio commentaries from artists and curators about the works.

Leader of Westminster City Council Rachael Robathan said “We’ve all missed the buzz of the West End’s theatres, opera houses and galleries, and while some are starting to reopen, we're doing everything we can to bring more fantastic art outdoors where people can enjoy it safely. We hope this is the precursor to a full re-opening of the West End when we are sure it is safe to do so.”
