Twitter announces a new ‘Super Follow’ function

Twitter announced a pair of big upcoming features today: the ability for users to charge their followers for access to additional content, and the ability to create and join groups based around specific interests.

Twitter announces a new ‘Super Follow’ function

The payment feature, called Super Follows, will allow people to restrict access to their posts behind a paywall, meaning that only paying followers – or “Super Followers” – will be able to see them.

In a mockup screenshot, Twitter showed an example where a user charges £4.00 per month to receive a series of perks. Twitter sees it as a way to let creators and publishers get paid directly by their fans.

“Exploring audience funding opportunities like Super Follows will allow creators and publishers to be directly supported by their audience and will incentivize them to continue creating content that their audience loves,” the company said in a statement.

With the rise of influencer culture, Patreon and OnlyFans it was a predictable move made by the social media network because it gives creatives an opportunity to monetise their audience and build a stronger following that it committed to supporting your work.

The second feature, intended to resemble Facebook Groups and is called Communities. That will allow online users with the same interests to create and join groups, filter their tweets within the process. 619bbd3bbc9b71f26640ee6dcdb0d2b52dc6fe76.jpgImage: Twitter

There’s no timeline yet for when either of these features will launch. Twitter listed them as “what’s next” for its platform during a presentation for analysts and investors this afternoon.
