Playmakers has introduced a new initiative designed to support local performance writers called Writing to Play.
Writing to Play aims to establish a community for writers, promoting theatre work that focuses on illuminating and commemorating life in the districts of Winchester and Hampshire in new and exciting ways.
The Writing to Play Network, with support from parent charity Play to the Crowd, will collaborate with writers to explore different ways of delivering live stories and original theatrical experiences using different mediums such as dance and music. These will be performed for Hat Fair Outdoors Art Festival and Playmakers Youth Theatre, as well as other projects across the Winchester district.
This new initiative launched by Playmakers will begin with two online Writers at Play weekend retreats that will take place on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 March, and Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 March 2021.
The Writers at Play weekend retreats will focus on encouraging and supporting writers to discover new forms and opportunities for their work, with a particular focus on producing original performance work for and in the Winchester area. Both events will also feature practical activities, tasks and challenges in a safe and supportive environment that will provide writers with the chance to collaborate and learn together.
The weekend retreats will be led and mentored by Playmakers Resident Writer and Dramaturg, Richard Hurford, who has more than 25 years of experience as a performance writer and has worked in the UK, Europe and the US. In addition to producing his own work, Richard has mentored other writers and artists across several different genres.
The weekend retreats are free to attend, but places are limited. Everyone who applies however, will be added to the Writing to Play Network for future opportunities and events.
The Writing to Play initiative welcomes applications from writers of all experience levels who are over the age of 16. Applicants are able to apply from anywhere, though priority will be given to writers who live, work in, or have a meaningful connection to the Winchester district in addition to writers from Hampshire, Berkshire, West Sussex, Dorset, Wiltshire and Surrey.
The deadline for applications is 1 March 2021 at 12pm.
