Academy Awards 2020: Winners

A monumental night for South Korean film

Academy Awards 2020: Winners

History was made at the 92nd Academy Awards when the scathing social satire Parasite took home best picture – the first time a non-English language film has ever won the top prize.

Directed by Bong Joon-ho, the subtitled South Korean film focused on two families from different classes, and the exceptionally different lives they both lead.

The film additionally picked up the award for best original screenplay, and Bong Joon-ho also picked up best director, an award expected to go to Sir Sam Mendes for 1917.

But 1917 didn’t go home empty handed, winning three awards: best cinematography; best sound mixing and best visual effects.

Joker, nominated for 11 awards, took home just two. Hildur Guðnadóttir picked up the best score, and inevitably, Joaquin Phoenix received best actor.

Best actress went to Renée Zellweger for her performance in Judy.

Voice’s resident film buff Tayo had a cracker of a night with his predictions, so check them out here and comment on how clever he is. He will also be posting a more in-depth analysis of the night so keep your eyes peeled for that.
