Brighton Fringe announce 2022 bursary winners

Brighton Fringe have announced the winners of their 2022 bursary programme, which is delivered in association with their funders, sponsors and supporters, including The Pebble Trust, Ironclad Creative, Encore Insure and more.

Each year Brighton Fringe works closely with local and national organisations to offer bursaries and funding opportunities for Brighton Fringe participants.

Long-standing funder and member of the Brighton Fringe patron circle The Pebble Trust have awarded bursaries to three organisations. The first is X-CITE, who are a youth-led promotion and label that provides young DJs and producers with a platform to perform. They are scheduled to perform at the Brighton Youth Centre on 13 May.

The second is Pattern Up Gallery, a multi-art medium exhibition and performance depicting messages around mental health held at Presuming Ed’s Cafe. Finally, they have awarded a bursary to Reflections, held at Brighton Youth Centre. Incorporating interview material from older generations, Reflections explores how stories shape us; for better or worse.

Separately, The Pebble Trust International Touring Bursary has been awarded to ParaladosnajoS from Brazil, who are contributing to the 2022 programme with two shows; The Twins, a family fun-filled show, and Wet & Dry, a vibrant physical theatre show.

South East Dance has awarded their 2022 bursary to Fish Out Of Water, where music, dance and sculpture combine to create a unique, fun and interactive performance.

The Brighton & Hove Pride Bursaries have been awarded to Tell Me Why, by NoAgEnDeR. Performed at Ironworks Studios, Tell Me Why is a musical theatre piece incorporating original contributions from the community identifying as Gender Fluid, Non-Binary, Trans inclusive of LGBTQI+ and allies striving to celebrate diversity with inclusion at its core.

As part of a new initiative, Culture ConneX, supported by Brighton & Hove Pride’s Cultural Development Programme, bursaries have been awarded to Paradigms of a Paradox at Ironworks Studios, a vibrant multidisciplinary Hip Hop Theatre performance event showcasing Brighton’s dazzling young creative talent.

The Ironclad Creative New Writing Bursary has been awarded to My Heart is a Spark, a humorous story about grief and confronting our greatest fear: losing who and what we love, hosted at the Phoenix Art Space. Paul Macauley, writer and performer, invites the audience on a delightfully bittersweet journey inside the muddle of a world turned upside down, finding light in the darkest of places and asking: how do we bounce back?

Encore Insure also awarded a 2022 bursary to My Heart is a Spark, as well as #BLEEP at Sweet @ The Poets, a semi-autobiographical spoken word comedy turned dark thriller that’ll have you questioning your grip on life following a junior doctor on an into-the-wild expedition. They additionally awarded a bursary to The Formidable Lizzie Boone at Laughing House @ The Walrus, pulling you into Lizzie's world for a night of drama, healing and dark humour, and Fragile, which sees an independent and strong woman in a dangerous and deadly situation.

Finally, The Luke Rollason Memorial Bursary has been awarded to Eco Maniac at Komedia Studio, which sees Aruhan navigate the mammoth climate crisis, as well as explore her experiences as a mixed-race British - Kazakhstani woman; and Potatohead, which tells the story through puppetry of a humble spud Charlotte, who dreams of becoming a stand-up comedian at Brighton Spiegeltent which can be found at The Rotunda Theatre.

Tickets for over 700 events including this year’s bursary recipients are on sale now at brightonfringe.org/whats-on/
