New Music Friday: Emily Daccarett

New Music Friday: Emily Daccarett

Every band, group and artist has a name - what is the story behind yours?

My artist name is actually my birth name. I studied fashion design, and while I was in class sketching, my teacher turned to me out of the blue and said “You know if you ever start your own brand, you have to use your name!”.

Eventually, when I set out to start my fashion line, I did use my name. As an artist I do change and evolve my style, so [by] using my name I felt free from having to stick to a specific image. That being said, I felt conflicted when coming out with my music and continuing my brand in the same way, but in the end, it felt right combining both worlds [of] fashion and music.

How did the band/group get together?

We met in the Musicians Institute and would jam together for fun. I’m so thankful to have such talented friends. When I was getting ready to release my songs and be an artist they were there for me.

If you could describe your group/band in three words what would they be?

Fun, passionate, and goofy!

Tell us at Voice about your latest release. What makes this project different?

‘Fading Memories’ is the lead single to my upcoming album, ‘Yours Always’. This is a concept album dealing with loss, rejection, love, childhood innocence and hope. This song is influenced by the nouvelle chanson genre. I wanted to really bring out the story and almost have the listener feel like you are being read a lullaby.

Nothing in music is ever new but how do you try to keep your music, artistry and vibe original?

I approach each song like I’m telling a story and I do not follow trends in music. I think that helps my music feel relevant because it comes from a very honest place. My music grows with me, it’s my way of making sense out of life.

What would you say are your inspirations in music?

I take a lot of inspiration from films; I love movie soundtracks. I love when a director and composer fit both image and sound so perfectly. I’m also inspired by David Bowie, Serge Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin, Vanessa Paradis, Kate Bush, and Lana Del Rey.

How do you remain motivated to create and any tips for budding artists?

I’m constantly researching and reading! It’s how I tend to find inspiration for both music and fashion. Challenge yourselves by stepping out of what you are used to or are surrounded by. I let my curiosity run wild and it really pays off.

Did you always want to do music and when did you start to take music seriously?

I started ballet when I was five and I fell in love with music. As a dancer you become one with the music, it directs you, and tells you how to move. I had given up on the dream to sing when I decided to focus on fashion design.

In the end it was fashion that brought music back into my life. I had produced a short fashion film and needed an original song. That’s how I met my collaborator and producer, S. Peace Nistades. We continued to work on original music for my fashion shows, until I finally made the decision to pursue a career as a singer/songwriter as well as designer. I released my first EP, Cannibal, in 2019 and have been working on fusing my two worlds together ever since.

What should we expect to see from you in 2021?

I have a new album coming out! Right now, we have been producing visuals for different media. I want to create a 360 experience with music, fashion, and film.

Where can we find out more about you and your work?
