Interview with Malick Bright aka Android X

Could you first introduce yourself to the reader?

Hello, I’m Malick Bright aka Android X, 25 YO dance artist from London, specialised in Krump, Flexing and Afro styles.

How would you describe your show?

It’s a Sci-Fi Circus Concert with me as the titular KID_X, sharing the stage with singer Eva Lazarus who plays my adoptive evil genius mum and hand balancer Amanda Attwood as my forbidden love interest - it’s like Romeo and Juliet in Cyberspace with a soundtrack by Mungo’s Hifi Sound System. Here’s the KID_X / Mungo’s Hifi / Eva Lazarus music vid!

Why do you want to perform at Edinburgh Festival Fringe?

The only time I’ve been to Edinburgh was for my Duke of Edinburgh award… don’t really know what to expect but I hear it’s a big deal… I’ve been working on this show for 2 years so I’m really excited to finally present it.

What differentiates it from other festivals?

My usual gig is either busking at my crew’s Oxford Circus spot, when I’m not doing music videos or playing clubs… I expect it will be very different for me!

What first motivated you to enter the industry? Who were your inspirations?

I've always danced Afro in my house but after studying contemporary, ballet and ballroom at college I then discovered London's Trocadero Underground jam spot and honed my techniques in Krump and Flexing. This was a big inspiration coupled with seeing the dance crew, Jabbawockeez inspired me heavily.

If you didn’t have your current job, what would you probably be doing?

Honestly, I have no idea…Probably on the roads.

If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?

A dancer and musician who makes loads of money doing whatever he wants to (I’ve started to write and release my own music tracks, you can listen on Spotify here: http://bit.ly/AndroidXActivated

What is your earliest childhood art memory?

Performing in the choir aged 6.

Do you ever feel any pressure to be a social commentator, or constantly update material to respond to events?

Pressure? What pressure?

If you could work with anybody, from any point in history, who would you pick and why?

Stan Lee. I’d like him to recreate me as a superhero.

When and where can people see your show?

Come see us from the 20-25 August, 10am at Assembly Roxy:
