Interview with Ashley Blaker

Ashley Blaker quickly answers some questions about his upcoming EdFringe show

Interview with Ashley Blaker

Could you first introduce yourself to the reader?

I am normally described as the UK’s only strictly orthodox Jewish comedian.

Tell us about your show?

The show is about how I went from being a secular Jewish TV producer to being strictly orthodox and not even owning a TV (it’s forbidden!). And considering how crazy my life is now, hopefully I’ll be able to explain why on earth I still do it

Why do you want to perform at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and is it different from other festivals?

The only festivals I’ve ever taken part in were Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Passover. I hope Edinburgh will be more fun.

What first motivated you to enter the industry? Who were your inspirations?

Genuinely, I became a stand-up by mistake. Someone asked me say something at an event and I enjoyed it.

Do you ever feel any pressure to be a social commentator, or constantly update material to respond to events?

Not hugely, but I am aware that as an overtly Jewish comedian there is a list of topics people expect me to cover: Corbyn, Labour, Israel, that dog that does the Nazi salute et al. I will of course cover them all.

When and where can people see your show?

It’s only daily at Underbelly at 3pm (except Saturdays).

And where can people find, follow and like you online?

www.ashleyblaker.com is my website and has all the links to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
